Tips for Keeping Your Children Happy and Healthy at Home

Talk to Them Often

It’s common and almost expected for your children to be curious about the things going on around them. If your children are asking you questions or seem interested in what’s going on, be sure to communicate with them the best you can. Change can cause children to worry about several things, including their family, friends, and themselves. This can lead to further distress and may result in permanent issues such as anxiety. The best thing you can do for your children at this time is to talk openly with them and use reassuring language that helps them cope with those feelings.

The CDC has provided some tips to help you talk to your children to minimize their fears which you can view here.

Remain Calm and Neutral

When talking with your children about sensitive topics such as this, it’s important to maintain a calm and neutral tone with them. It’s okay to be scared or worried, but showing these emotions in front of your child while talking to them can have negative effects on their emotions and mental health. Children are like sponges that absorb everything around them. They easily take in what is being said and are quick to pick up on non-verbal cues. Because your child will react to what you say and how you say it, the best way to talk with your children is in a calm and neutral voice.

Take the Time to Listen to Your Children

While it’s crucial that you reach out and talk to your child, it’s also important that you listen to them. By making yourself available to listen to your children, the more confident they’ll feel opening up to you. Your child should feel comfortable expressing their feelings and asking their questions, so giving them your undivided attention during these times is essential.

Implement Healthy Routines

Routines are essential for adults and children alike. They help limit uncertainty and stress in children which is being severely disturbed due to the pandemic. Maintaining a healthy routine, even if it differs from what your child is accustomed to, will help them cope with all the changes occurring around them. Start by assigning a goal or theme each week to help keep children motivated and focused. Also, be sure to set aside time for your children to spend relaxing and learning. And lastly, make time in their schedule for some outside play to help them feel refreshed and get them out of the house. Feel free to add in any other things that you feel will benefit you and your child.

Teach Your Children How to Stay Healthy

Lastly, be sure to teach and reinforce preventative actions your children should take to stay healthy:

  • Wash Your Hands – Should be done with soap and water for 20-30 seconds. Be sure to show them proper hand-washing methods and how to use hand sanitizer. If your child is 6 years of age or younger, make sure they only use hand sanitizer with supervision,
  • Wear a Mask – Children ages 2 and older should be wearing masks that fully cover their mouth and nose.
  • Social Distance – Let your child know that they need to keep 6 feet away from others at all times when out of the house.
  • Cover Coughs and Sneezes – Make sure your children are covering their nose/mouth when sneezing or coughing.
